About MTGOCasual
What is MTGOCasual?

MTGOCasual was created as an outlet and place for all things casual. If you’ve read the thread on the MTGO Boards trying to answer the question “What is Casual?” then you know that Casual can be different for everyone. With this in mind, MTGOCasual is run as a center for enjoyment of the game – no matter what you find enjoyable. This means you probably won’t be interested in every single thing available here – our hope is that you will find something to enjoy…and if you can’t find anything – you should go to the forums and suggest it!

Who runs MTGOCasual?

As you can see at the top of the site, Alphabot and CardBot are the sponsors for this site. This means that all event prizes and giveaways come directly out of their pockets. The development/design of this site was paid for by the owner of Alphabot, who works on various aspects of the site on a day-to-day basis. We also could not function without the support of our event hosts, board moderators, and other volunteers who work tirelessly to make this site a success.

What is the Casual Players League (“CPL”)?

If you like to play MTGO, then you probably will be interested in the CPL – a league for any player who likes to play “casually” (note the quotation marks…you can define this yourself). Similar to the CTL, all CPL players can congregate in a specific room (/join CPL to start, but subject to change if the room becomes overrun with bots…who will also incidentally join the black list) and find players interested in playing some casual games. It is very important that you are descriptive in your game requests if you care what you play against…and if you DO care what you play against, don’t just join any old game – talk to your opponent a little bit before you join! In the CPL you can leave feedback for anyone you play against. Make sure you think before you post feedback, and give more information when you rate someone low. NOTE: in order for your feedback to count, your playing partner must also leave feedback for you – so make sure you ask them to do so if you plan to.

What can I do in the CPL?

Aside from finding people to play games with, we’ll be running events (better known as Player Run Events, or PREs). You can find out about all current and upcoming PREs sponsored by MTGOCasual (in other words, Alphabot and CardBot) on the front page. We’ll be trying out new ideas for events in order to get participation from lots of new players. If you have any ideas for events, make sure you post them on the boards so we can have a look. For those that want casual ratings, the CPL also offers ladder matches. A ladder match will affect your MTGOCasual rating, which is set up to calculate similar to sanctioned matches played online (with a fixed K value of 16). You can play a ladder match against each user ONCE per format. Any other games you play against that same user are just casual games. NOTE: Your opponent must also report the match results in order for them to count, and they must match (i.e. you both cannot select you won). If the results do not match, both of you will have up to 7 days to change your result, after which time, if the results do not match, record of the match will be deleted from our database. Users that consistently have matches dropped from the system will be investigated and possibly banned for misreporting results. Obviously we have no way to verify who wins or loses – but the ratings are just for bragging rights – so just be honest, or be prepared to face the consequences if you do not. For Multiplayer games, all players must submit results, and these results must match as well.

Tournaments and “Casual Ratings” – That doesn’t seem very casual to me…

First off, remember that “casual” is in the eye of the beholder. Second, you can choose how you participate in MTGOCasaul. If you aren’t interested in a casual rating, you don’t have to play ladder matches. The ratings system was added as a way for any spike types to play some non-sanctioned formats and get a rating in them. The tournaments (PREs) are for fun – you are not required to play; we will design them to appeal to all of the three player types (timmies, johnnies and spikes) – and we recognize that not all players are one or the other, but some combination of the three. We encourage everyone to suggest ways we can make the PREs more FUN.

Do I have to register to participate in these events, or to join the CTL/CPL rooms?

You are not required to register to join either the CTL room to trade, the CPL room to play, or to participate in any MTGOCasual event hosted online (trading or playing). There are some things you do need to register for though – posting on the forums, searching our member database, giving and receiving feedback, and playing ladder matches. Of course, we would encourage anyone participating in anything MTGOCasual to register, but it is entirely up to you.

How can I register?

Simply go to the “Sign Up” link at the top of this page. You need to provide your MTGO Username (which will be your User ID for MTGOCasual – please do NOT create an User ID if you do not own the corresponding MTGO Username), an email address, and create a password. You can also provide your location if you wish. You also need to create a separate login for the forums, if you’d like to post there (we use PHPBB, which has a separate agreement you must acknowledge when signing up).

How much will all this cost?

MTGOCasual is absolutely free (thanks to Alphabot and CardBot!). It is free to sign up and free to participate in ALL events.

What else can I do at MTGOCasual?

We have a section for articles, and forums to discuss anything you wish. We also have specific forums to discuss fantasy cards, deck construction, and new formats. These forums will, from time to time, have contests (e.g. best fantasy cards, deck construction challenges, and contests to design new formats). We encourage everyone to participate actively in the forums.

I’m interested in helping out, what can I do?

We’re happy to have you help! We’re always looking for people to help moderate the boards, vote in contests, write articles, improve the website, and help run events. If you are interested, please check out the “Contact” link at the bottom of the page and message someone listed there to discuss what you’d like to help with.

Comments, questions, concerns, and criticism should also be submitted using one of the methods described on the “Contact” link. You could also post these in the forums for a potentially quicker response.
